Sal slowed her steps. It was her favourite time of year - spring leads to summer and the river comes back to life. A yacht brought ripples to the water beside her and she thought on the sheer beauty of a river. Early holiday makers were enjoying themselves and the English accents she knew well sent a tingle down her spine. Her mind went to Jen and wondered how she was doing. Sal missed her and didn't want to think about her for too long because she knew she would get emotional again. Phoning later seemed a good plan but for the moment she tried to think of something else.
Walking aimlessly, looking for inspiration for her new assignment, Sal wandered into a cafe. She ordered a coffee and sat facing the river. It was mid-morning, quieter than usual. Callum was at uni and would be away most of the day, leaving Sal with nothing to do. Well, that wasn't entirely true; Sal had to work on her folio for the art school. She had a week to take 5 pictures - related and with meaning - then write about them. Her camera round her neck, Sal fiddled with the keyring her sister had given her before she left. She missed Aberdeen. She missed her family. She missed Jen. She missed Grace. Jamie was coming to visit next week but until then she had a few days of loneliness to look forwards to.
She gazed at the silver light of the river and was once again reminded of its beauty. The reflection of a tree was wobbling as another boat passed; a young couple walked hand in hand on the other side; a small humming bird flew just above the water, seemingly mesmorised by what it saw. Sal thought she could sit for hours just watching the life of the river...

"The life of the river!"
That was it! Sal jumped and almost shouted it! Photography project sorted! She could feel others around her staring at her sudden excitement! She wondered why she hadn't thought of it before. It was her love of the river that kept her here and what better to do than capture it at its best? Her notebook and camera at the ready, Sal left without finishing her coffee and almost ran to the riverside to get a picture of the humming bird before it flew away!
