Name: Liam
Type: male
Second name: Glover
Age: 18
Birth Place: East London.
Occupation: Student at LSBU and part-time barman at a dive in Clapham.
Family: Mother: Tanya Bristow, 37.
Stepfather: Allan Bristow, 35.
Sister: Lydia Bristow, 5.
Father: Ian Glover, 41.
Liam’s mother is fairly young for her age, with bottle blonde hair and a figure that lets her get away with wearing the same sort of clothes that her son’s girlfriends do, a point of envy for her friends but a quality that has just led Liam to label her immature. She is essentially a self-centred woman though she never means to be, and just doesn’t believe that growing older means that she should have to stop living life to the full. She works as a secretary to an accountancy firm, though often wishes that she did something more glamorous.
Allan Bristow, a shift worker at a power station, married Tanya six years ago after she divorced her first husband. They met through a mutual friend and their relationship quickly developed. He has always tried to fit in with Tanya’s existing family but can’t help but feel slightly awkward around her son, as being a father figure to him makes him feel old. Five years ago they had their own child together.
Lydia is now five years old and already promising, able to read and write better than many children in her class now that she has started formal schooling. Like any young child, she looks to her family, including her elder brother, as role models. Liam is in turn protective of the girl, though he can’t help but harbour some feelings of jealousy for this child who seems to be growing up to become everything that he is not.
Liam’s father Ian has always looked out for his only child, but his work as a builder and his reluctance to see either Tanya or Allan means that he does not see much of his son. Whenever he does he tries his best to be supportive, but there is only so much that he can do.
Religion: As an Atheist, Liam believes that life is what you make it.
General Appearance: With mid-brown, perpetually slightly too long hair and eyes that can’t seem to decide whether they want to be blue or green and settle for somewhere in between, Liam is pleasant enough looking. He’s of average height and weight, and his face isn’t one that stands out in a crowd. He finds that this works quite well for him really, because he equates getting noticed too much to becoming a target. That said, his smile is persuasive and he has a natural charisma which he generally puts to good use trying to get his way. He has never made a conscious attempt to work out but has always been a fan of football. This and life in general have made him reasonably fit so that while he might not appear particularly impressive, he could certainly hold his own in a fight.
Likes: His camera, his most prized possession.
The anonymity of big cities.
Being able to do what he wants, when he wants.
West Ham United.
Film and how it’s made, including special effects.
Interesting patrons at his bar.
Dislikes: Academia.
Following conventions.
Close-mindedness.
Sob-stories.
Strangers who insist on sharing their life stories, and expect him to do the same.
Skills: Whether this is an asset or not is questionable, but Liam is a talented liar.
Resourceful, he is good at making the best out of a bad situation.
Give him some money and by the end of the week he’ll have doubled it. Just don’t ask how he did it.
He’s good at getting out of sticky situations, and knows when to keep his mouth shut - essential for surviving alone in the city.
He can be charming when he wants to be.
Fears: Death.
Relying utterly on someone else.
Someone else relying utterly on him - he’d be scared he’d let them down or get them killed.
Being stuck behind the bar for the rest of his life.
Never amounting to anything.
Weaknessess: Sometimes he finds it hard to stop lying.
While he seems to get on well with even complete strangers, he finds it hard to trust even the people he’s closest to, which can scupper relationships.
Once a relationship has got past the purely physical aspects, he really has no idea what to do.
He tends to be selfish.
He’s never been able to sustain a relationship, possibly because he panics when a girl becomes clingy.
History: Liam was born and grew up in east London. His parents got divorced when he was ten and his mother remarried two years later. Though Liam resolved to dislike his new stepfather on principle, he took full advantage of his parents’ guilt at disrupting his family life. On his fifteenth birthday his stepfather gave him a camera as a gift, perhaps in an attempt to win Liam’s loyalty, and he has been interested in photography ever since.
He has never been good at academic subjects and did poorly at school, deciding that since he wasn’t much good at it anyway he might as well not bother. The only subjects that he ever did well at were art and graphics, which he went on to do at college. He recently got a place at South Bank University to study photography, delighted to finally get out of the Tower Hamlets and away from his family, he is starting independent life at last.
Hopes for the future: Liam hopes to make a living out of his trade, photography. He intends to find work as a wedding photographer or work at a studio to get into the industry and thinks that maybe one day he’ll be the next Jerry Uelsmann.
